Why Exosomes Are Replacing PRP as the Gold Standard for Skin Repair and Hair Restoration
If you've heard of the "Vampire Facial" — the PRP treatment that uses your own blood to promote skin healing — you've seen the predecessor to what's happening now.
On this episode of AA Skin Babes Unfiltered, Kristin Sandborn and Georgia Davenport sat down with Kelsey Rhodes, an Independent Aesthetic Partner representing Excellence Exosomes, to break down one of the most significant advances in aesthetic medicine right now: exosome therapy.
What Are Exosomes?
Exosomes are extracellular vesicles — tiny messengers that travel between cells and tell them how to behave. Kelsey describes them as "text messages" between cells: they carry instructions that direct cellular repair, collagen production, and inflammation response.
As we age, our natural exosomes become less effective. They "dull out" — they're still there, but they're not communicating with the efficiency they had at 20.
Excellence Exosomes sources their product from umbilical cord tissue — what Kelsey calls "Day Zero" exosomes. These are the freshest, most bioavailable exosomes available because they come from tissue that hasn't undergone any aging.
Exosomes vs. PRP: Why the Comparison Matters
PRP works by spinning a patient's own blood to concentrate growth factors, then applying that plasma to stimulate healing. The limitation: it's only as good as the patient it comes from. An older patient or one with chronic inflammation will have less potent PRP.
Exosomes don't have that limitation. They bring external, youthful cellular intelligence to the treatment — regardless of the patient's age or health status.
The Treatment Applications
**Microneedling add-on** — Adding exosomes to a microneedling treatment dramatically enhances results and reduces downtime. Kristin's analogy: microneedling creates the "car accident" — controlled trauma that triggers healing. Exosomes are the "ambulances and fire trucks" that accelerate the response.
**Hair restoration** — Particularly effective for hair loss related to postpartum changes and GLP-1 medication use. Applied via microneedling to the scalp, they tell dormant follicle cells to function youthfully again. Clinical results show significant improvement over approximately 9 months.
**Zero-downtime option** — For clients who can't tolerate microneedling, exosomes can be delivered via ultrasonic device. Same benefits, no downtime, no discomfort.
The Freeze-Dried vs. Frozen Debate
Freeze-dried exosomes have better shelf life, but the freeze-drying process compromises the integrity of the exosome structure. Excellence Exosomes uses frozen, intact exosomes to ensure full bioavailability when applied.
