Spray Tan Fails Explained by Licensed Estheticians: What Went Wrong and How to Fix It
Spray tans look effortless when they work. When they don’t, the results are memorable for all the wrong reasons.
On this episode of AA Skin Babes Unfiltered, Lena Dolbow, Kristin Sandborn, Georgia Davenport, and Shelby Ayres reacted to some of the most cringe-worthy spray tan fail videos on TikTok — and turned each one into a practical lesson on how to get a flawless result.
The Mistakes That Ruin Spray Tans
Applying anything sticky post-tan
Applying a pore strip or pimple patch after a spray tan will pull the tan off with it. Pimple patches are doubly problematic because they often contain acids that break down the DHA in the spray tan formula. Rule: nothing sticky on your skin until after your first rinse.
The shower cap line
If your shower cap sits too far down on your forehead during a spray tan, you’ll end up with a harsh, un-tanned line across your forehead. This is one of the strongest arguments for getting sprayed by a professional rather than using an automated booth.
Tanning over makeup
Makeup, lotion, and oil create a barrier on the skin that prevents the spray tan solution from absorbing properly. Always arrive for a spray tan with clean, bare skin. This includes deodorant — certain formulas interact with DHA and can turn the armpit area orange or green.
Jewelry lines
Remove everything before your appointment. Tan lines from jewelry are difficult to blend.
Spray Tan Prep: The Non-Negotiables
- Exfoliate 24 hours before — Remove dead skin cells so the tan applies evenly
- No moisturizer day-of — Especially on knees, elbows, and ankles
- Arrive clean and bare — No makeup, no deodorant, no lotion
- Wear loose, dark clothing after — Tight clothing can rub the tan before it develops
If Something Goes Wrong
The team’s go-to fix for an uneven or patchy spray tan: a DIY scrub of lemon juice, baby oil, and baking soda applied gently to the affected area. For the face, a glycolic acid night cream will help fade the tan faster.
